My preferred method is to get to high altitude (maybe keep slightly to the edge of the main conflict) then pick off lone high flying migs or F-4s. The AIM-9D is a bit of a departure from other missiles, it seems that the further you are from the target the better it does. The seeker also seems to track a bit better when the target has sky behind them (as opposed to ground).
Also don't bother firing the thing if there are a number of targets next to eachother, the seeker will just get confused and the missile will fly off course. So you want to pick a target which is not likely to turn the afterburner off (at least until the missile is close), and you want one which isn't manoeuvring too much as that could result in them turning around so their engine no longer faces the missile. Beyond about 5.5 km you are relying on the target having an afterburner on and the AIM-9D is still a rear aspect missile, so they need to have their engine facing you (or if you are lucky be side on to you). The 13 km kill is the exception, not the rule, but you can do 7-9 km pretty consistently.
